Since its foundation in 2002, Maladype-Theatre of Encounters has always put a great emphasis on the cooperation of artists coming from different cultures, traditions, artistic or professional backgrounds. As the name shows (the word “maladype” means “encounters” in Lovari language), Maladype originated as a company consisting of Roma and non-Roma actors, aimed at creating performances through which Hungarian and Roma culture could mutually inspire, form and develop each other.
We have taken a very long way during the past seven years: today Maladype, led by actor and director Zoltan Balazs, is one of the best-organized and best-known independent theatres of Hungary, making 2 or 3 new productions every year and playing 15 performances every month. Our productions, greatly inspired by music, dance and fine arts, have been invited to various national and international theatre festivals, and have won significant prizes among independent theatres.
Though the composition of the company and our working conditions have changed a lot for the past few years, our artistic principle has remained the same: we are seeking after the synthesis of different artistic genres, studying and exploring the fertilizing effect of other arts – opera, film, ballet, puppet theatre, dance etc. – on theatre.
We are in continuous and active communication with the most remarkable representatives (theatre directors, film directors, composers, musicians, dancers) of contemporary art, in Hungary and abroad, and time to time we create collaborative artistic productions with them. In case of our international projects our main interest is not merely the exchange of performances through festival participations, but rather the exchange of thoughts, methods, ideas, approaches to theatre. That is why we often organize workshops or create co-productions with directors such as Árpád Schilling or Sándor Zsótér or take part in international collaborations such as Middentity 2007 in Nitra, Slovakia.
Our cooperation with Claudio Collova goes back to 2002, Stuttgart, when both him and Zoltan Balazs were invited to work on Büchner within the frame of an international project initiated by the Union of European Theatres. Having recognized the similarities between their theatrical approaches and appreciating the remarkable merits of Mr. Collova’s work, Zoltan invited him last year to hold a workshop on Woyzeck for our company in Budapest. The success and the inspiring force of the work made it evident for all of us that the collaboration should be continued. Therefore we asked him to make his Woyzeck with the actors of Maladype in Budapest in 2008 and we are very proud of the fact that he accepted our invitation.
Making Woyzeck, making it with him and making it this year has a special importance for our company. After 7 years of working, the company of Maladype has undergone a serious transformation by the end of last season. Not only do we have new members, but a new host theatre and new collaborative partners as well.
We chose the very first performance of the new company to be Buchner’s Leonce and Lena, which play - in our interpretation - is about the collective experience of collaborative theatre making. The production, which uses the elements and methods of physical theatre, has turned out to be the emblematic production of a new company and the starting point of a new phase in our theatrical way. For these reasons it is of great significance for us that the premiere of Leonce and Lena (which was held in May 2008) will be immediately followed by the premiere of Woyzeck, the other masterpiece by Büchner. Therefore a possibility arises for us to make one step further into the artistic world we entered when creating Leonce and Lena. Not only do we have the opportunity to make further studies on Büchner and his unique world, but also we have a chance to try an other experiment on physical theatre, from a different artistic point of view.
The rehearsal period of the production takes 3 months, the premiere will be held on 13 November 2008, Thália Theatre, Budapest. On the basis of our agreement with Thália, there will be 5 performances per month during the season. Also we would like to present the production in a number of cities besides Budapest and to introduce it in several festivals as well. Nevertheless, the premiere of Woyzeck will not be the end of our co-operation with Mr. Collovà. We are intent on making the collaboration even stronger by working together with the actors of his company, the Officine Ouragan from Palermo, and trying to find a possibility to create a new production with the participation of both companies. That is one of our greatest wishes and most important plans for the future.

Sin dal 2002, anno della sua fondazione, il Maladype-Theatre of Encounters ha posto grande enfasi sulla cooperazione tra artisti provenienti da differenti culture, tradizioni artistiche e professionali. La parola Maladype significa ‘Incontro’ in lingua Lovari. La compagnia è stata originariamente fondata da attori Rom e non, e il suo scopo iniziale è stato quello di creare spettacoli in cui la cultura ungherese e quella Rom potessero ispirarsi, formarsi e svilupparsi reciprocamente.
Abbiamo percorso molta strada durante i sette anni trascorsi: oggi Maladype, diretto dall’attore e regista Zoltan Balazs, è uno dei gruppi di teatro indipendente meglio organizzato e conosciuto in Ungheria, e conta tra 2 o 3 nuove produzioni a stagione e rappresenta i suoi spettacoli ben 15 sere al mese. Le nostre produzioni, fortemente ispirate dalla musica, dalla danza e dall’arte visiva, sono state invitate in molti festival teatrali nazionali e internazionali, e sono state premiate con significativi riconoscimenti e premi tra il teatro indipedente.
Sebbene la composizione della compagnia e le nostre condizioni di lavoro siano cambiate radicalmente in meglio in questi ultimi anni, I nostri principi artistici sono rimasti immutati: siamo sempre alla ricerca di un linguaggio che possa essere la sintesi di differenti ambiti artistici, e studiamo ed esploriamo il fertile effetto delle altre arti – opera, danza, teatro di figura – sul teatro.
Siamo in continuo e attivo scambio con i più significativi rappresentanti e artisti del teatro contemporaneo in Ungheria (registi teatrali e cinematografici, compositori, coreografi e danzatori), in Ungheria e all’estero, e spesso creaiamo le condizioni per produzioni artistiche di collaborazione con essi. Nel caso dei nostri progetti internazionali il nostro interesse non è mero scambio di spettacoli o partecipazioni a festival, ma piuttosto lo scambio di pensieri, metodi, idée, approcci al teatro. Ecco perchè spesso organizziamo laboratori o creiamo co-produzioni con registi conosciuti come Árpád Schilling o Sándor Zsótér o partecipiamo a collaborazioni internazionali come il Middentity 2007 in Nitra, Slovacchia.
La nostra collaborazione con Claudio Collovà risale al 2002, a Stoccarda, quando con Zoltan Balazs, furono entrambi invitati a lavorare su Büchner nell’ambito di un progetto internazionale promosso dall’Unione dei Teatri d’Europa. Avendo riconosciuto le molte affinità tra i loro approcci al lavoro teatrale e apprezzato i considerevoli meriti artistici di Claudio Collovà, Zoltan invitò questi a tenere un laboratorio sul Woyzeck per la nostra compagnia a Budapest. Il successo e la forza ispirata del lavoro rese evidente a tutti noi che la collaborazione dovesse continuare. Quindi l’invito rivolto a Claudio Collovà di dirigere la produzione sul Woyzeck con gli attori del Maladype a Budapest nella stagione 2008 e siamo molto orgogliosi che abbia accettato il nostro invito.
Realizzare il Woyzeck, realizzarlo con Claudio Collovà e in questa stagione ha una speciale importanza per la nostra compagnia. Dopo sette anni di attività, la compagnia Maladype ha subito profonde trasformazioni durante la conclusione della stagione passata. Non solo abbiamo nuovi membri nel gruppo, ma un nuovo teatro che ci ospita e che si è reso per noi anche coproduttore, il Thália Theatre, uno dei più prestigiosi teatri di Budapest, situato nel centro della città, che ha messo a disposizione per le prove e le rappresentazioni delle nostre produzioni il Teatro Studio.
La nostra prima produzione della nuova formazione è stata il Leonce e Lena di Büchner che – nella nostra interpretazione – ha portato avanti il nostro processo teatrale basato sull’esperienza di gruppo. Lo spettacolo, che usa gli elementi e i metodi del teatro fisico, è stato per noi un punto di svolta e ha segnato una nuova fase del nostro fare teatrale. Per queste ragioni è per noi significativo non solo che alla prima di Leonce e Lena segua la prima del Woyzeck, l’altro capolavoro di Büchner, continuando a indagare il suo mondo artistico unico e ancora attuale, ma anche che ci sia data la possibilità di tentare un nuovo espriemento I teatro fisico, da un un diverso punto di vista artistico.
Il periodo di prove di questa nuova produzione diretta da Claudio Collovà è di tre mesi, la prima sarà il 13 novembre 2008, al Thália Theatre di Budapest. Durante la stagione in corso lo spettacolo verrà replicato per 5 sere ogni mese. Inoltre lo spettacolo sarà presentato in varie città ungheresi e prenderà parte a diversi festival nazionali e internazionali. In ogni caso, la produzione del Woyzeck non sarà l’ultima collaborazione con Claudio Collovà, ma è nostra intenzione rendere ancora più solida e duratura la collaborazione con il regista italiano e il suo gruppo continuando a lavorare con gli attori della sua compagnia, l’Officina Ouragan di Palermo, e creando una produzione che veda la partecipazione di entrambe le compagnie. Questo rappresenta uno dei più grandi nostri desideri e il più importante piano per il futuro della nostra compagnia.
